Find out how

The lovely medieval village of Dozza lies just 35 km from the major city of Bologna and about 40 km from the Tuscan border. It may not be on every tourist’s “top ten” list but we think it should be! Dozza offers the best of art, a preserved historic center, a magnificent castle, and excellent food and wine. So without further ado, andiamo to Dozza.

Dozza: One of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”

Immersed in the gentle hills of the Santerno Valley, Dozza sits at about 200 meters (620 ft) above sea level or just high enough for fabulous views of the surrounding countryside. At first glance, it is already obvious to the onlooker why Dozza has made the elite list of one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”. It is both majestic and delicate at the same time.

Sforza Fortress

Its most striking feature is definitely the Rocca Sforzesca, or the Sforza Fortress. In the late 15th century, this medieval castle was transformed by Catherine Sforza into a fortified stronghold. It is now a museum containing many of the original furnishings and works of art from the 16th century through the 20th century when it belonged to the Malvezzi-Campeggi family.

In the basement, you’ll find the Enoteca Regionale Emilia-Romagna containing hundreds of wine labels from the region. There is also a wine bar and tastings held regularly. Wine tours also depart from here for an adventure along the Sentiero del Vino

Village of Artists

Visitors will also notice immediately that Dozza is not your ordinary village. It is called the “Village of Artists” for its fabulous murals and paintings embellishing the building facades throughout the historic center. Since 1960, over 200 artists have permanently left their mark on the village, and to this day, a mural competition is held biannually in the month of September.

You can also schedule a walking tour along the outskirts of the village where you’ll have breathtaking views and come across other works of art by various artists who have participated throughout the years. For more information about scheduling the Passeggiata degli artisti (“Artists’ Walk), send an email to:  rocca@comune.dozza.bo.it

Santa Maria Assunta Church

Don’t miss the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Piscina in the historic center. Built in the 12th century on the remains of an ancient Romanesque church, Santa Maria Assunta holds stunning artwork from the 15th century. Inside the church, there is also a sculptural lunette from the Lombard period and a 16th-century baptismal font.

Romagna Cuisine

And when in Romagna, eat like the locals! Some of Italy’s best cuisine is from this region. Homemade, fresh egg pasta noodles and tortelli, and the famous piadina flatbread are just some of the local favorites. Because Dozza is so close to Tuscany, you can also enjoy a true Bistecca alla Fiorentina as well.

Dozza makes the perfect day trip from the lovely Tuscan town of Palazzuolo sul Senio in the tranquil Mugello area. Here are two recommendations for lodgings in the area.
