Calabria is known for its rugged landscapes, genuine people and cuisine, and its sea. Located in Praia a Mare, Hotel Pian delle Vigne is situated in the northern part of the 80 km-long Riviera dei Cedri (which means “Coast of the Citrons”).

All 20 rooms are equipped with air conditioning, Wi-FI, a private bath, and a balcony. Many of the rooms overlook the Gulf of Policastro where you can enjoy spectacular sunsets. There is also a lovely terrace where guests can enjoy a glass of wine or an aperitif overlooking the sea.

When you stay at Pian delle Vigne, you’ll also be able to experience its restaurant with an old olive mill dating to the 1700s. Centuries-old olive trees, climbing bougainvillea, and a pergola covered in grapevines are the backdrop to this lovely atmosphere overlooking the gulf. Dishes always include the fresh catch of the day as well as other classic, regional recipes using only the freshest, local ingredients.

The Beaches

Most people are drawn to this area for one main reason and that is the fabulous beaches. Praia a Mare boasts both the Blue Flag and Green Flag awards for its pristine waters and child-friendly beaches. The shore along this stretch ranges from fine sand to small pebbles.

There are plenty of lidos available where you can rent an umbrella and lounge chairs as well as sections of “free beach”. But, staying at Pian delle Vigne gives you the extra bonus of having the option of being picked up by shuttle which will take you to a lido near Dino Island (Isola Dino). 

Isola Dino is a prime location for snorkeling, scuba diving, taking boat tours of the various sea grottos, or simply just strolling around the island on foot.

San Nicola Arcella is the next major seaside town just a few kilometers south that you won’t want to miss! Famous for its natural arch that the sea and wind have eroded over time, the incomparable Arcomagno. Make sure and catch a view of the sunset through Arcomagno’s “window”- truly breathtaking.

The entire coastline is worth exploring where the beaches range from fine sand to rocky cliffs. In addition to its beach, the town of Diamante* is definitely worth a stop for the lovely murals that adorn the entire historic center. A bit further south, the coastal town of Santa Maria del Cedro* has a museum dedicated to the citron fruit, the riviera’s namesake. 

And from the hotel, you’re only 15 minutes away from Maratea, one of the Basilicata region’s top beach destinations!

Other Activities

If you want to spend a day or two away from the beach on your holiday, then you can visit Pollino National Park where you can hike, mountain bike,  go rafting, and visit remote villages like Papasidero. 

If you’re really adventurous, you can actually go paragliding right in Praia a Mare with a qualified instructor who will accompany you in “flight” as you soar over the turquoise sea.
