The world-famous Carnevale di Venezia is back this year from February 12 through March 1, 2022. The theme this year is adapted from a famous quote by the artist Salvador Dalì: “More than anything, I remember the future.”

The city of Venice has come up with an original program of events that will combine tradition and innovation in the wake of the ongoing pandemic. The organizers have made safety and crowd management their top priority.

Performances and Shows

Musicals, circus acts, acrobats, puppets, and clowns will be just some of the various shows Venice has in store for both the young and old.

They will take place in the historic center of Venice in the following locations:

Campo Santa Margherita, Campo San Giacomo, Esedra-Castello, Campo San Geremia, Campo San Cassiano, Campo dei Gesuiti, Campo Santa Maria Formosa, Sant’Elena. And also in Mestre, Terraferma, and the islands.

On the weekends and also on Shrove Monday and Shrove Tuesday, there will be repeat performances from 11 am to 1 pm and again from 3 pm to 7 pm. On all other days, the performances will take place from 3 pm to 7 pm.

Carnival on the Water

The water festival will take place on the bacino dell’Arsenale (Venetian Arsenal) with a parade on the water in a spectacular show of water, land, fire, and water. A ticket is required as well as a valid green pass. The dates are February 18, 19, and 20th and again on February 24th through March 1st. Two shows will be held daily at 6:45 pm and again at 9:15 pm.

The grand tradition of the Festa delle Marie will take place once again with the final selection on February 28th at the La Fenice Theater.

New this year is an ice skating rink in both Campo San Polo and in Piazza Mercato Marghera.

Please note that the following events will not take place this year due to the pandemic and in order to avoid unnecessary crowding.

  • The “Venetian party” in the Cannaregio stream on Saturday evening and the water procession in
    Grand Canal on Sunday morning
  • The large animated boxes of Piazza San Marco and Piazza Ferretto
  • The processions of Marie and del Toro
  • The flights of the Angel, of the Eagle, and the flight of the Leon
  • The parades of allegorical floats in Lido, Marghera, Campalto, Zelarino, Pellestrina and
    Burano
