Find out how

The beautiful island of Sardinia is known all over the world for being one of the most desired seaside destinations. White beaches, turquoise water, hidden coves … and I’ll stop there because this article isn’t about the beach but about the only natural lake on the island – Lake Baratz.

Lake Baratz: Sardinia’s Only Natural Lake

It is located in the province of Sassari just 2 km from the coast (Porto Ferro) and can be easily reached on foot in just 20 minutes. In fact, the beach dunes helped to form this valley and the lake itself.

Surrounded by pine forests, Baratz is located in a beautiful natural setting. Near the lake, you’ll find an information center where you can get details about the various paths around the lake which can be traveled on foot, by mountain bike, or on horseback.

The Species of the Lake

Perhaps the best-known species of Baratz is the freshwater tortoise. It is also a paradise for birdwatchers because you can spot coots and mallards along with many others.

Lake Baratz is not suitable for swimming due to the high mineral content and the muddy bottom, but if you feel like taking a dip, you’re only minutes from the sparkling Sardinian sea.
