51 years of the Barcolana, coined “the largest sailing race in the world”, returns to Trieste from October 2nd through 13th, 2019.
History of the Barcolana
The Barcolana began in 1969, and since, has been named the “the largest sailing race in the world” by the Guinness World Records. The regatta is not just about race day, but it transforms the maritime city of Trieste into the European capital of sailing with a full week of events. Over two thousand sailboats are expected at the starting line of Faro della Vittoria (Victoria Lighthouse) on the Gulf of Trieste.
The number 51 is symbolic in so many ways this year: the first regatta in 1969 had exactly 51 boats that participated and this year’s edition has 50 magnificent years of experience left in its wake. Up until 1979, it was basically dominated by sailboats from the local yacht club and has always represented the end of the summer sailing season. Since then it has transformed into an international event attracting sailors, both amateur and professional, from all over the globe.
The opening ceremony will take place on October 2nd beginning at 6 pm at the San Giusto Castle in Piazza della Cattedrale. Expect an entire week packed with various events involving books, music and film and lectures. Many of the events are free to the public and all can be found in detail on the official website in English.
Happening simultaneously with the week-long Barcolana sailing festival, Trieste will also host Barcolana in Città or “Barcolana in the City”. Visitors can “sail” along a special route called Percorso shopping which will stretch across the city.
From September 29th to October 8th, all the shops that endorse Barcolana will be welcoming visitors and sailors along this unique route and hosting a variety of sea-themed events.
On the evening of October 12th, don’t miss “Barcolana by Night” at Molo Audace – Bacino San Giusto. This event never fails to thrill its spectators. The organizers have decided that the course will include a mark placed right at the entrance of Canale Ponterosso. Spectators cheering and supporting their favorite teams from ashore is an experience that cannot be missed!
Sailors can register every day through October 12th, between the hours of 9 am and 7 pm at the Regatta Registrar’s Office at Viale Miramare 32.
The official website has a wealth of information in English regarding everything sailors and visitors will need to know to plan their visit to the unforgettable Barcolana!
