Lake Suviana in Emilia-Romagna

In the Tuscan–Emilian Apennines, about an hour from Bologna and a few kilometers from Porretta Terme you’ll find Lake Suviana. This artificial lake was formed in 1932, after the construction of a dam and now makes for a relaxing holiday destination. 

Suviana is the largest lake in the province of Bologna and one of the major ones in the Emilia-Romagna region. It is part of the Regional Park of Suviana and Brasimone Lakes and functions as a source of hydroelectric power and also for lake sports and summer tourism.

If you decide to spend a day at Suviana Lake, you will find restaurants and cafes on both sides of the lake, equipment rental for fishing, canoeing, windsurfing, sailboating, trekking, umbrellas and chaise lounges, but also sections of “free” beach where visitors can set up their own stuff.

What to Do at Lake Suviana

Visiting Lake Suviana is the best of both worlds- the beach and the hills. In fact, at almost 500 meters above sea level in the Apennines, the climate is very mild and pleasant. Days are warm enough to enjoy watersports and sunbathing, yet not as hot and humid as it is in the city.

If you love nature, then this place is for you! It’s a popular destination for campers, RVs, and even day-trips for family barbecues and picnics. It’s well-equipped with public picnic tables as well as grilling areas.

Hikers can take advantage of the trails along the lake shores with Club Alpino Italiano (Italian Alpine Club) signage, which allows you to take a walk around the lake in a few hours.

For visitors who enjoy the water, you can rent paddleboats, canoe, sail, kayak, and windsurf. It’s important to note that swimming isn’t allowed because of the hydro-electric dam.

Around Suviana Lake

Near Suviana Lake, you can visit the nearby villages of Bargi and Stagno, both overlooking the lake.

Bargi is characterized by a monumental church that is visible even a few miles away. The architecture of the church resembles a cathedral and has an incredible view perfect for taking pictures from above!

Stagno is characterized by its medieval castle of the Lords of Stagno who once governed a large part of ​​the Apennines.

If you want to venture out even further from Suviana, you can also visit Brasimone Lake within the natural park. If you do visit, make sure to see the chestnut forest in Poranceto which has trees that are hundreds of years old.

Another destination is Porretta which is the largest village in the Corno alle Scale district. This area is famous for its thermal baths and luxury spas.
